Many of us dutifully show up twice a year at synagogues and obediently recite the responsive readings that include numerous names for God...but we never seem to get around to talking about what we mean. When we say the word "God," are we speaking about a being? A force? The source of all life? All of the above? How and when do we experience the Divine? What Jewish spiritual and theological insights and approaches are particularly helpful at this difficult time? A former political speechwriter who recently published a book about Judaism (long story) poses these questions and others to guests with a wildly diverse array of perspectives on God.
From 2009 to 2017, Sarah Hurwitz served as a White House speechwriter, first as a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama and then as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama. Prior to serving in the Obama Administration, Sarah was chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 presidential campaign. Sarah is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law school, and she is the author of Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life – in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There).
